On May 22nd 2007, The Churak family forever changed when their youngest child, Caitlyn was diagnosed with
an inoperable brain tumor called diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG). DIPG is a rare form of brain cancer with
terrifying statistics:
· There are only about 200 cases diagnosed each year.
· Due to the diffuse nature of the cancer there are no surgical options, and current chemotherapies have
been found to be ineffective.
· With treatment, the median survival rate is less than 12 months.
In researching Caitlyn's diagnosis it was also discovered that Childhood glioma (brain tumor) research is grossly
underfunded. The cure rate for most brain tumors is significantly lower than that for many other types of cancer.
The glioma family of tumors account for almost 45% of all tumors. They are the second highest cause of cancer
deaths among young people.
On 5/30/07, Caitlyn began taking zarnesta and radiation therapy, Caitlyn's tumor shrunk 75%. The zarnesta trial
was discontinued after the 3rd MRI showed tumor growth of 30%. The family searched for another course of
treatment. Caitlyn began avastin / irinotecan trial on 11/05/07.
The family has faith and have seen God's blessing during this difficult time. They has been touched by the
outpouring of support from family, friends, strangers, their church, school, and community. This truly is a battle;
so we ask that you continue to keep Caitlyn and her family in your prayers in the days ahead. Please also pray
for the other children battling this disease.
